TL;DR
We get it – keyword research can feel overwhelming. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be a shot in the dark.
What if we told you there’s a simple, data-driven method that helped us achieve an average 37% ranking improvement across 16 keywords?
Meet the keyword opportunity analysis: a straightforward approach that separates the wheat from the chaff in your keyword strategy.
What exactly is a keyword opportunity?
Think of a keyword opportunity as a diamond in the rough – a search term with genuine potential that just needs the right push to shine.
But how do you spot these hidden gems? It’s all about looking at the right metrics:
- Current position: Where you’re ranking right now
- Search volume: How many people are actually searching
- Keyword difficulty: How tough the competition is
- Click-through rate: How often people actually click
- Relevance: How well it fits your business
The magic happens when you weigh all these factors together. A high search volume keyword isn’t automatically a winner if the difficulty is sky-high. Conversely, a lower volume keyword can be absolute gold if everything else aligns perfectly.
The sweet spot? Keywords already ranking on page one or two, with solid search volume, manageable difficulty, and proven click-through rates. That’s where the real opportunities hide.

Once you have the template, follow this step-by-step process:
Step 1: Export your data
First, head over to Ahrefs, plug in your website, and export your organic keywords into a Google Sheet.
Then, jump into Google Search Console, navigate to your queries, set the date range to the last 12 months, and export that data too.
💡
Pro tip: Remove any keywords ranking first (you’re already winning there) and anything beyond the 50th position. If you’ve got over 10,000 keywords, this filtering becomes even more crucial.
Step 2: Set up your analysis sheet
Head to the Google Sheet template and copy the data into the right tabs:
- Search Console tab: Paste in keywords, clicks, impressions, and click-through rate data
- Ahrefs tab: Add keywords, volume, difficulty (KD), current position, and URLs
Step 3: Set your volume threshold
What counts as “high volume” in your niche? Start with 5,000 as a baseline, but adjust based on your industry. A B2B software company might consider 500 searches high volume, while an ecommerce site might need 10,000+.
Step 4: Let the data work its magic
Copy all your keywords from the Ahrefs tab into column A of your “keyword opportunities” tab. Do the same with URLs in your “URL opportunities” tab, making sure to remove duplicates.
Filter both tabs by score (Z to A) and voilà – your biggest opportunities rise to the top.
What to do with your golden keywords
Now you’ve got the data, but data without action is just fancy procrastination. Here’s how to turn insights into rankings:
Optimise your titles and headings
Use your top keyword opportunities to refresh titles and headings. Keep them natural, compelling, and within 50-70 characters. This remains one of the strongest ranking signals – don’t overlook the fundamentals.
Revamp your meta descriptions
While meta descriptions don’t directly influence rankings, they massively impact click-through rates. Spot URLs with low clicks? Rewrite those descriptions to be concise, intriguing, and laser-focused on user intent.
Refresh thin content
Look for underperforming pages and use your keyword opportunities to guide content updates. Add value, answer questions, and write naturally – keyword stuffing went out with dial-up internet.
Implement structured data
Adding schema to your high-opportunity pages can boost visibility through rich results. It’s like giving search engines a roadmap to understand your content better.
Build smart internal links
Connect related pages to your opportunity URLs using keyword-rich anchor text. It’s a quick win that passes authority and gives your target pages the ranking boost they deserve.
Launch targeted backlink outreach
Focus on pages already ranking mid-page with strong keyword potential. Often, just a few quality backlinks are enough to push them into the top positions. Remember: quality trumps quantity every time.
Create supporting content
For tougher keywords, build topical authority by creating related blog posts and guides around your target page. Keep it helpful, keep it relevant, and always link back internally.
The proof is in the pudding: Our 37% improvement case study
We put our money where our mouth is and tested this exact approach on five pages from websites we actively rank. Here are the keywords we targeted:
- Digital PR and SEO terms (20-390 searches)
- Backlink-related keywords (20-1,000 searches)
- Eye health queries (100-1,100 searches)
- Car insurance terms (2,200-3,900 searches)
We applied every strategy we’ve just shared: optimised titles and headings, improved content and user experience, added smart internal links, built backlinks, and implemented structured data.
The results? An average ranking improvement of 37% across all targeted keywords.
That’s 16 keywords, 5 different URLs, and 128 positions improved – an average of 8 positions per keyword using this straightforward technique. The best part? These pages are still climbing.
Why this approach works when others fail
There’s a lot of noise in the SEO world, but this method cuts through it because it’s built on three pillars:
- Data-driven decisions: No hunches, no gut feelings – just cold, hard metrics
- Focus on quick wins: Target keywords already showing promise rather than starting from scratch
- Holistic optimisation: Address multiple ranking factors simultaneously rather than pinning hopes on single tactics
